to take to task
«Принять как задание». В XVI в. это выражение означало «принять на себя что-либо как задание, работу». Позднее оно стало означать «призвать к ответу», «дать нагоняй», «сделать выговор». Это изменение в значении случилось в XVIII в.

The boss is not very happy with the way John carries out his duties. John has been taken to task more than once for his off-hand attitude towards important clients. — Начальник очень недоволен тем, как Джон относится к своим обязанностям. Джон уже не раз получал выговор за своё невнимательное отношение к важным клиентам.
